The Equine Team

Meet Romeo

Biography: Romeo – The Horse Who Walks Beside You

(Told in his own words)

I’m Romeo, a 12-year-old gelding and once a devoted equestrian show jumper. I soared over fences with precision and pride… until an injury changed everything. Seven years ago, I hurt my foot—badly enough that they said I’d never jump again. So I was retired to pasture, where I spent my days watching the wind move through the fields and wondering what was next.

Then, a trainer saw me. She believed I wasn’t done yet. I traveled to her barn and discovered a new role—lesson horse. The one who brings calm, who lends confidence. I wasn’t just teaching; I was connecting. The kids called me chill, steady, safe. And for the first time, I felt like my heart had room to grow.

Four years later, Samantha found me. She didn’t just see a retired jumper or a good lesson horse—she saw me. She saw my strength, my soul, my potential. And suddenly, I had a new purpose.

Now, I’m part of the Equine Therapy Team. I walk beside those who need healing, not to lead and not to follow—but to be present, together. I don’t leap fences anymore. But I do help people rise. To trust again. To find peace. To remember their strength.

I'm Romeo. And I’m honored to walk this path with you.

Meet Wave

Biography: Wave - The Horse Who Sees Your Soul

(Told in her own words)

I'm Wave, I am a 20 year old mare. I am retired from the show jumper world.  In the ring I'm spicy and fast - I don't like to lose! But 6 feet on the ground I can be your best friend for life. I am what they call a been there done that horse - which means I have done it all and I am pretty safe to be around because nothing really bothers me.

I have had many owners but Samantha will be my last. A final home to settle into my best years. To work with the Equine Therapy team and use my best skills of life experience to help others. I am sensitive horse with a really big heart.

I think because I moved around a lot and had many different homes, I found it hard to trust. So building relationships are important for me to trust and to follow but when I do - I will love to the end and will never forget you. I have my own mind - and can see into your heart. I can feel when you do not believe in yourself; even when you cannot see this.

I am Wave. And I want to show you that you can trust again - first starting with yourself.

Why I use horses and how it changed my life too

I have always loved horses.  I grew up with them but had lost touch with that life over the years. It wasn't until I was much older; finished school, traveled, and settled down in Alberta in 2013 that I started to revisit my goals. I knew that I was going to become a Psychologist, own horses again, and then bring the two things I love together.

When my mind is full, and I feel uncertain - I go see the horses.

When I don't see a path forward, and don't feel grounded - I go see the horses.

When I feel scared, when my heart hurts - I go see the horses.

When I go see the horses, it is not comfort from those feelings, it is not a way to avoid, it is peace. The answers are within me, and within you to solve unwanted or unhealthy thoughts. And when we have this peace, we are shown a way forward that is lined with confidence and filled with love for ourselves in the choices and decisions we make in this world. We are accepted.

I feel accepted. I feel loved.

As a psychologist, we cannot control the world that happens outside four walls of the office for our clients. But as a psychologist with horses, I can bring an experience of that world to you. To challenge what we know to be truth and write our own narrative. Where we once felt broken, we can feel whole.

A horse cannot lie - a natural born instinct to be truth-tellers. Horses can share a special gift. The gift to be seen and be a true reflection of who we are and who we can become.
