About equine therapy

The Equine Approach

Equine therapy is an experiential treatment option that incorporates individual and horses working together to enhance treatment goals and outcomes.

Persons engage with the horse in different activities that are planned and overseen by a helping professional. Depending what the goals are will depend on the type of activities. The activities are tasked to teams/families/individuals along with the horse(s) to be completed in a designated, safe space. This is typically a non-mounted (6 feet on the ground) experience.

With any type of animal assisted treatment, there are some risks that vary based on the animal - and with that the setting will always have a trained person on site and for support and safety reasons. Each horse is also chosen specifically for their ability to work in these types of settings.

Sometimes it is recommended to see a therapist for some in-office sessions before you attend an Equine session; however it is not necessary. Talk to your therapist about what will work best for you.
